The 5 News Week: Naomi's In-Ring Return Attracts Non-Wrestling Fans, WWE Filed Trademarks For Victor And Dana Brooke.
Hello, my fellow wrestling fans and welcome to the 5 news week. The post where I report 5 major or minor news of the week that I don't have time to do it separately. Without further ado, here are The 5 News Week.
The former 2-time women's champion came back to the square circle in the women's Royal Rumble match with huge fanfare however, it also got a lot of positive reactions from non-wrestling fans.
A tweet with the video of Naomi's return got over a million views with 100 thousand likes with people saying that they're gonna watch wrestling now or she's an example of black excellence. It later spanned with other similar tweets with tens of thousands of likes and an artwork (damn, that's a lot of withs).
The fact that somebody took their time to draw artwork for a performer they don't know much of but liked what they saw goes to show you why representation is extremely important in any field.
I took part in an article about representation in September of last year and I recommend you check it out because it tells you how a person that looks like you succeeds in a grander scale can inspire people to do the same. I'll leave my quote below because it describes it best:
"One of the reasons why diversity is important is that it solves people’s perception of certain communities, ethnicities and countries, and when you put a POC in an art form like wrestling, it benefits for the longevity of pro wrestling."
Mauro talked about his life after leaving social media entirely in an interview with TSN (the sports network) Vancouver 1040 (from 411MANIA):
"Social media is so dangerous to those of us with mental health conditions, and I know in the media and in our everyday lives now people are being hired and fired by their social media followings or the amount of information they post or how popular they are. I think it’s a disease, so out of that situation, with my colleague, I am no longer on social media, I will never get back on social media."
Social media can be beneficial but it can also be cruel so I don't blame him or anybody for leaving social media.
It's a shame though that he left because I really liked him interacting with fans and posting some thought-provoking quotes but at least we get to see the Mauro we cherish on NXT every week.
Rousey hasn't been in WWE for almost 9 months and she didn't shy away about a possible return to television in a pro wrestling setting in an interview with Corey Graves on his After The Bell podcast that has only one listener and that's himself to quote me a month ago. Here's what she said (from SEscoops):
Probably, whenever the hell I feel like it. If they would just let me show up at live events, probably very soon,” Rousey said.
“I love the camaraderie and the kind of laidback feeling of live show days. Jump in the car afterwards and go to the next town. Never being able to find food and eating beef jerky all night. I miss that.”
Her star power is needed right now in my opinion. The main roster's women's division surely does need it.
There's no denying her influence in the professional wrestling industry and that will certainly be talked about in the late Chyna's new documentary that is starting to film soon which is being authorized by her mother Jan LaQue. The press release says quote:
"Production on the only “Official and Authorized” feature-length documentary of Joanie “Chyna” Laurer has begun. Laurer was known to the world as a groundbreaking professional wrestler and as the “9th Wonder Of The World.” This documentary has been authorized by Joanie Laurer’s estate.
The documentary will explore Laurer’s tremendous influence both inside and outside the ring to millions of adoring fans through interviews and images with a wide range of subjects selected, including Joanie’s mother, Jan LaQue.
Laurer rose to stardom in the early 2000s. She was the first woman to wrestle men in the ring as an equal. Her presence in the ring arguably provided the first mainstream female perspective in professional wrestling.
But her strength and determination made her more than a groundbreaking force for women in sports. She became a symbol for gender equality around the world and she inspired a generation of woman and men alike.
“My daughter, Joanie Laurer, led a remarkable life. I am excited to partner with a production team who is passionate about telling her true life’s story, not just the parts that played out in the ring or the tabloids.” says Jan LaQue, Laurer’s mother. “To that end I have selected a woman producer to work with who understands that the public only knows a small bit of Joanie’s story. I want to restore her legacy, a legacy that has been tarnished by others. Joanie deserves this and so do her true fans.”
“Our production team could not be more honored to help tell the story of Joanie “Chyna” Laurer’s life. We are committed to approaching this project with integrity and respect,” says Producer, Erin Hayes. “Laurer showed a generation that women can be strong and smart. Hers is a story we want to tell and to preserve. She wasn’t a wrestler, she was a champion and she inspired the lives of so many people. That’s the story we are going to tell.”
Production has already begun on the documentary. The team is currently filming interviews with those who knew Laurer personally, experts, and people who have shared amazing stories about the influence she had on her lives. Additionally, the documentary will expose the manipulation her legacy has endured by those looking to profit from Laurer’s fame/personal struggles and will show her fate was the product of the #metoo era.
For the latest information on the documentary, check the production’s website. Regular updates will be made on TheJoanieLaurerStory.com."
I'm definitely checking that out and I'm sure most of you guys will too.
The filing for a trademark train continues for world wrestling entertainment as they filed three trademarks for the names of Dana Brooke, Viktor and Konnor of The Ascension (which I thought they did that already) PWInsider and Mike Johnson reports.
This will keep the former Viktor (real name Eric Thompson) from using that name given that he's going to start wrestling independently next month.
The Ascension had so much potential and I thought they were going to have at least some decent success on the big leagues but they didn't, unfortunately. Wishing The Ascension dudes success and hopefully, Eric stays as far away from Billy Gunn or other DX members as possible.
What do you think about the news I just reported and follow me on the tweets @omartheplayaguy. Anyways, stay safe smarks.
