Should Dave Meltzer Get Rid Of His Rating System?

Image result for dave meltzer

So a few weeks ago, good old Dave Meltzer of the wrestling observer newsletter gave the Kazuchika Okada vs Kenny omega match at dominion 2018 a 7-star rating. According to the interent wrestling database, this match is by far his HIGHEST match rating ever (i don't blame him because the match was amazing). So statistically, this is his favourite match of all time. Now, why I'm writing this now?

Well, his best match ratings have been a consistent 5 stars since 1983 with the exception of all the Omega vs Okada matches and the Mitsuharu Misawa vs Toshiaki Kawada match at AJPW's Budokan hall show in June of 1994.

There are fans that take his match ratings as an offence somehow like "Why he rates X match better than Y match?" or thinks that he "hates" WWE which is ridiculous considering that he gave three WWE matches a 5 star ratings just this past year. One was the ladder match to crown the first ever NXT North American champion, the Johnny Gargano vs Tomasso Ciampa unsanctioned match at NXT Takeover New Orleans Wrestlemania weekend and the Johnny Gargano vs Andrade Cien Almas match for the NXT championship at NXT Takeover Philadelphia Royal Rumble weekend.

Since he went with his ratings higher, should he just get rid of his ratings and just give his opinion on whether he loves the match or not? My answer would be yes but he doesn't need to do this. What do I mean by that? Well, he needs to give a rating scale on which match was great, which match was ok and which match sucked by stars since he's been using the stars format for over 35 years. 1 star means the match sucked, 3 stars means the match is ok and 5 stars which are the highest scale means the match is great so that it gives his audience the sense of consistency with his ratings.

I'm gonna end with this, at the end of the day wrestling is subjective. What makes a great match to a Dave Meltzer is different from me and other wrestling fans. Does his 7 star ratings means that he's objectively right because he's a famous wrestling journalist? NO. It means that he loves that particular match at that's it and we wrestling fans shouldn't makes excuses as to why he or any other wrestling fan loves or hates a particular match. In other words, like what you like and stay respectful when someone has a different view.

  1. As an outsider, I know Gamejolt recently got rid of their 5 Star rating system citing that users respond better to a simple like/dislike system and it's a little hard to gauge what a 3/5 rating for a game means. While this system may work better for a mass user rating system, maybe it'd work out for Meltzer?

Kind of like the way RT says something is fresh/rotten by whether it has a 6/10 or higher. Would use different nomenclature because those terms tend to be divisive.

    Anyways, insightful article!

WWE Smackdown 12/11/21 | A Coherent Review.

While there were a few redeeming qualities about this week's episode of Smackdown, the show as a whole was kinda bleh to me. Images via WWE.com   Chaos Ensued Amongst The SmackDown Women's Survivor Series Team.  Sonya Deville introduced the participants in the women's Smackdown Survivor Series team to which a brawl ensued after Sasha Banks wanted to beat up Shotzi. Naomi came out to even the odds between the heels and the babyfaces in that scene.  And you know what all of that means? A 6 women tag team match, Playas. By far, the most impressive person in this match was Naomi. The finesse she showed with her series of kicks was *chefs kiss*.  Speaking of impressive, the crowd was BEHIND Aliyah and that's cool. Naomi's assistance led to Aliyah pinning Natalya to win the entire match. I said "Naomi's assistance" for a reason because as soon as that victory, Aliyah was taken out of the Survivor Series team.  God damn, Sonya Deville legit hates POCs succeed...

WWE RAW 22/2/21 | A Late Coherent Review.

I'm happy to say that I liked this week's edition of Monday Night RAW for the most part which is something I've wanted to say for several months.  Images via WWE.com Miz TV. Special Guest, The WWE Championship Around Miz's Waist.  Yes, my friends. The Miz is the WWE champion like it's 2011 all over again.  Miz was glowing about his WWE title win. The Hurt Business in Bobby Lashley and MVP showed up to tell Miz that they mentioned a deal with him regarding a championship opportunity for Bob Lashley.  Bob Lashley then threatened the guy to give him an answer in an hour and that's how the opening segment ends.  This segment does something that is rare in WWE TV and that is, simple storytelling.  Every single time, WWE has overcomplicated their storytelling and it's quite frustrating at times.  It's nice to see a story playing out that uses a minimalistic storytelling device. An hour later, Braun Strowman got into the mix telling Adam Pearce and Shane McMa...

WWE RAW 1/8/22 | A Coherent Review.

With Triple H making some changes for the overall WWE creative process and the end of the "Jeff Jarrett weekend", I gotta make some changes as well (at least for the site) because this is going to be the last solo RAW review since I'm going to combine both of my thoughts on RAW and Smackdown called "the cohesive WWE perspective".  So yeah, how was RAW? Well, It was one of the best episodes I've seen in a VERY long time. I guess no more, " RAW Is as insane and bad as the current season of Riverdale" jokes, right?  Becky remembered who she was during her encounter with Bianca Belair.  That promo ruled and as a guy that didn't like her heel run all that much since her comeback last year, I gotta say that I'm glad she's going back babyface due to the fact that heel Bex was so vanilla for my liking.  After Bianca showed some respect to the man, the new trio known as Io Sky, Dakota Kai and Bayley attacked Becky's injured shoulder.  They a...
