My Late Coherent Wrestling Wednesdays: The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament Thoughts, Did Britt Baker Redeem Herself From Her Promo At the Rage Episode?

WWE Photo

Well, I said that I was going to review last week's episode of both AEW Dynamite and NXT but didn't expect to publish it almost a full week later and what is my latest excuse?

Well, I overslept 7 hours past the time I usually wake up (don't know how is that possible. Yay science?).

I'm not gonna talk about everything that happened on both shows considering that there are sites for that but rather state my highlights as well as some of my nitpicks.

I say nitpicks because last week's edition of NXT and AEW Dynamite were an enjoyable night of professional wrestling television.

Hopefully, I could review the latest edition of both shows tomorrow but for now, here are my thoughts.

NXT

The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament Thoughts.

WWE Photo

I've seen like all 5 of these of course and I've reviewed one of those aka last year's tournament (ahh, the days were NXT was only an hour-long) and this was the weakest out of all 5 dusty classics.

Now, that doesn't mean that this entire tournament was bad but rather it was quite the exact opposite. It was a solid, enjoyable tournament that satisfied me overall but it wasn't as good as last year's tournament.

I was, however, surprised as to who won the whole thing and it was given to the pairing of Matt Riddle and Pete Dunne.

I thought an actual tag team like a Grizzled Young Veterans would win this tournament but like last year, a random partnership up of two talented guys wins this whole thing.

We don't know how long the partnership will last but given that Aleister Black and Ricochet were stuck as a tag team a good 2 weeks after the tournament concluded, I'll be surprised if they lasted longer than a few weeks.

The match is made official between The Undisputed Era in Kyle O'Reilly and Bobby Fish and the recent Dusty classic winner for the tag team belts at Takeover: Portland and will see how it builds up going into Portland.

Randomly enough, I'll give my quick ranking of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Tournament by year below.

  • 2016.
  • 2019.
  • 2018.
  • 2015.
  • 2020.

And yes, for some reason, NXT didn't host any Dusty Classic in 2017 which was rather odd. It seemed as if they forgot they had a tag team division.

Keith Lee Will Face Dominic Djakovic For The North American Championship?

WWE Photo

I somehow forgot to mention Keith Lee's big win on my last week's review and all I can say is about Lee's North American title win is *queue the overused but appropriate chant considering the context* "You deserve it" *series of claps* "You deserve it" *series or claps*.

So, how did Dominic Djakovic become a possible challenger for the North American championship? Well, there was a segment between Keith Lee, Dominic Djakovic and Damian Priest.

Both Djakovic and Priest argued with each other as to whether Dominic or Damian deserves to face Keith Lee for the championship, leading to a match. Dominic won the match and we got ourselves a clear contender for the gold.

We don't know if this match-up is officially scheduled but we will find out soon and I can't wait for the match to happen soon enough.

Will Dakota Kai Get Her Revenge Win?

WWE Photo

The way this match has ended should've been saved for their Takeover match. However, this was a good one.

Candice LeRae took the chair from Kai and that distracted her to which Tegan Nox hits the shiniest wizard for the win.

I'm excited as to what Nox and Kai will bring to the table in Portland. If you thought that match was good, imagine how better it would be in a bigger stage like a Takeover?

AEW.

Jon Moxley Calls Out Chris Jericho.

All I can describe this segment was that Jon Moxley inserted himself in a 10 on 1 fighting odds (so, basically every Dean Ambrose segment in WWE right?).

Moxley has been in the top 5 most popular videos in AEW's YouTube channel so, from an analytical perspective, this makes a lot of sense.

While I don't mind Chris retaining the big prize, A possible Moxley reign as AEW champion is something I'm definitely intrigued by.

The Young Bucks vs The Butcher And The Blade.

This is the best match I've seen from The Butcher and The Blade or as I like to call the entire group, the BBB. Young Bucks wins here with the Meltzer Driver to The Blade.

After the match, Matt and Nick Jackson were attacked by the BB and Young Buck's elite members in Kenny Omega and Hangman Page made the save to which Page told Matt Jackson to literally hold his beer and delivered the discus clothesline to the Blade. That bit from Page was funny.

I for some reason, expressed my concern of Page drinking alcohol on television because when I think of "drunk person" storyline, I think of that awful Scott Hall storyline from WCW and so far, It hasn't offended me but will see in the coming months if I still feel the same way or not.

Did Britt Baker Redeem Herself From Her Promo At the Rage Episode?

Yes, she did. In my humble opinion, this was a  very good promo. She crapped on Tony and especially Jim Ross who she said quote "sloppy barbecue sauce sales rep you can't even our roster's names straight." Ouch.

By the end of that promo, Baker because she's a doctor, diagnosed Tony Schiavone with moderate to severe gingivitis which was straight-up hilarious. She should do more of that on the rest of the roster. That was. Fun. Ny.

That is all folks. Like I said earlier, I'll hopefully review the latest edition of My Coherent Wrestling Wednesdays tomorrow talking about all things NXT and AEW Dynamite.

The question is, what are some of the highlights on both episodes that I've missed? Let me know in the comments below and follow me on Twitter @omartheplayaguy. Anyways, stay safe smarks.

WWE RAW 9/5/22 | A Coherent Review.

Yes, I didn't review Wrestlemania Backlash because one, I knocked out after a long day and two, why not? I did watch the show and it's like an episode of a Telltale game in that it's short and sweet.  How was the red brand this week?  Even though Wrestlemania Backlash is over, it still feels like I'm watching a build toward that show. It's like eating yesterday's leftovers with some fresh salad on the side, ya know. I'm hoping Hell In A Cell concludes everything.  The Street Profits vs RKBRO For The RAW Tag Team Championship.  Hey, look. A good tag team match, playas! Yes, they've fought each other more times than Call Of Duty sequels but like I said, I enjoyed it. RKBRO retained the championship with an RKO from Riddle to Montez Ford.  Rhea Ripley Is Now An Evil Goth Girl.  She said, "f**k them, kids". Also, why's Edge rocking the "I believe in white genocide" look? Ripley had a match with Liv Morgan and of course, she won the w...

AEW Dynamite Blood And Guts | A Coherent Review.

Another watchable episode of AEW Dynamite but this time, it features the first-ever Blood And Guts encounter. Kenny Omega And Michael Nakazawa vs Jon Moxley And Eddie Kingston.  Don Callis announced that Michael Nakazawa is going to face Mox and Kingston all by himself only for Kenny Omega to show up and compete in the match anyway.  A weird booking choice but I'm just nitpicking.  What wasn't weird was how the match ended with a double team dragon suplex into a clothesline from the duo of Mox and Kingston to Nakazawa.  Then, a beatdown ensued from Omega's Posse to Jonny Mox and Eddie Kingston. The Young Bucks vs Jon Moxley and Eddie Kingston? I'm down.  It was revealed later in the night that a number one contenders match for the AEW championship is set up for next week's show between Orange Cassidy and Pac. I'm assuming AEW is saving the Hangman Page and Kenny Omega encounter for All Out?  Either way, AEW has the potential to tell an interesting story of ...

WWE Smackdown Season Premiere | A Coherent Review.

It is the season premiere of Friday night Smackdown even though WWE doesn't have an offseason.  Nevertheless, it was a decent program and had a WAY better ending than whatever the hell of an ending last year's premiere of Friday night Smackdown showed.  There isn't a women's match this week and all of the AEW fanboys are looking at this like, "sEe, WWE dOeSn't feATuRe wOmeN'S mAtChEs aLsO."  pictures via WWE.com The Season Premiere Of Smackdown 2020.  The show started off with Triple H and Stephanie McMahon highlighting the scheduled matches for Smackdown as well as the superstars.  Chaos then ensued thanks to a huge brawl. Then, the "super freak" Lars Sullivan came out and delivered the freak accident to Shorty G.  Somehow, Jeff Hardy attacked him and that led to the opening match of the night between Lars and Jeff.  You know, I'm kind of surprised that two white people in McMahon and Hemsley knew who Rick James is.  Maybe I'm igno...
