This was a SmackDown Live episode in a freshly coated paint. While it wasn't a success creatively, it did break even from a writing/creative perspective. In other words, it was disappointing but it wasn't the worst show ever. However, that new stage set. Fire!!!
Opening Segment For Friday Night SmackDown.
Becky Lynch shows up after Vince McMahon and Stephanie McMahon came out seemingly without an intro but there was an intro so that disappointed me for a second.
Lynch mentions how SmackDown is where the man was born and thanked the fans for pushing her to that side of her. King Corbin arrives to which the Los Angeles crowds goes ballistic when The Rock's music hits.
Rocky did his thing even calling Corbin "Burger King employee on crack" which was hilarious and made mentioned that just because Baron won King Of The Ring, that doesn't mean he's king just like when Becky calls herself the man, that doesn't mean that she has a pair testicles (I died laughing for 3 minutes. That was great).
The man and the most electrifying man eventually beat up Corbin with a leg drop from Becky, a glorified elbow drop……. I mean the people's elbow and the rock bottom from the Rock and that's how the first Friday night Smackdown opening segment in years concluded.
The Rock had always brought the salt, pepper and red chilli flakes in a big dish that is a long promo segment which is something no one in that roster possesses. That's why The Rock is the GOAT to a lot of fans including moi.
Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair vs Sasha Banks and Bayley.
Not as good as their match on the Madison Square Garden edition of RAW tag match but it was fine. Charlotte won her match with Becky with the figure eight.
Kofi and the rest of The New Day were interviewed by a Fox sports personality in Erie Andrews and she asked about Kofi Kingston as an underdog in his match with Brock Lesnar?
He answered by saying that he's always been the underdog and will retain his championship. Can backstage interviewers ask some good questions for once?
Seth Rollins vs Shinsuke Nakamura.
You may think it's Shinsuke's night but it truly isn't because there was a firefly funhouse segment before this match took place and in it, Bray Wyatt let Seth's biggest fan in rabbit be eaten by Mercy the Blizzard.
During this match, The Fiend interfered and choked out Seth once again with the mandible claw. Oh, and the match ended in a no-contest because why not? The build for this match has been decent with a lot of choking (okay, that sounded very odd).
Kevin Owens vs Shane McMahon In A Ladder Match.
"Can you imagine a WWE without Shane McMahon?" Yea, it was a reality from late 2009 until early 2016.
Shane McMahon delivered his signature elbow drop on Owens through an announce table followed by Owens hitting a frog splash through a ladder after the commercial break has aired.
The match ended with a powerbomb to Shane on a ladder which led to Owens retrieving the briefcase and he officially terminated Shane McMahon. I'm glad this story has ended with a very good ladder match and the fact that the storyline is done.
Braun Strowman, The Miz and Heavy Machinery vs AJ Styles, Randy Orton, Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode.
A very good promo by Paul Heyman about Brock Lesnar later and we got a tease between Tysons Fury and Braun Strowman because why not? Braun Strowman led his team to victory with a running powerslam to Ziggler.
Fury got more shine in this match even though he's not actually part of this match. That match between Strowman and Fury could be fun though.
Roman Reigns vs Erick Rowan In A Lumberjack Match.
The big dog and Rowan fight in the worst match type in wrestling and that is no exaggeration (of course, you're a wrestling fan duh?). Luke Harper shows up and the lumberjacks were trying to stop that but Roman jumped on the outside with a suicide dive.
Thanks to Daniel Bryan helping Roman with a running knee on Harper, Roman delivered the spear and won this match. Will see how the tag team match plays out in a PPV that has 4 matches as of me writing this.
Kofi Kingston vs Brock Lesnar For The WWE Championship.
This is it. The main event. The big match and it was a squash match. Brock Lesnar won his match with an F5 then, Rey Mysterio's music hits and here came Cain Velasquez and Cain tackled the beast which the full clip of that whole end segment got 1.4 million views on YouTube.
Kofi didn't hit a single punch on the beast and he went out like he's a local jobber bruh. Kofi's reign as champion was like a great movie with a shitty ending (I'm looking at you US directed by Jordan Peele).
I will say this, that match not only has a story written of itself in the sense that Cain has beaten Brock for the UFC title but as well as it's a big-money match so I get it from WWE's point of view. I thought Cain showing up was aight though. But, Will see how this plays out.
So, to recap for all of you slow mofos.
Like: Ladder match, opening segment.
Didn't like: Brock vs Kofi.
